What is Mixten Genetics?

Mixten Genetics is a webcomic I started writing in Fall 2022 after a spark of inspiration... or insanity. I somehow got the idea to start drawing characters loosely based around mythological half-human creatures. Given my science background, I decided a modern sci-fi story with a mythological twist could be fun.

The story mostly follows Olivia Greene and her experiences after making the poor decision to sign up for a clinical trial without reading the release form. I initially planned on making a couple one shot type comics with very little over-arching story, but that quickly changed as I just really enjoyed the characters I was coming up with. I used to draw a lot as a kid, and would even come up with little comic stories, but adulting got in the way. I'm finally trying to get back into doing regular art and making a webcomic is always something I've had in the back of my mind. I finally figured, if I'm going to do it, I might as well go ahead and do it.

Who am I?

I'm Matt Gibson (aka FossilJockMatt), a relatively unsuccessful Twitch streamer but actually decently successful museum curator specializing in paleontology. I've been trying to find a hobby besides just fossil related stuff and playing pokémon. That's what led to me to start streaming. I figured I could get myself to play some different games by doing that.

I was wrong, for the most part. I mostly streamed pokémon, although I did really get into streaming Animal Crossing: New Horizons there for a bit. However, streaming led directly to digital art since I started drawing assets to use with my stream. That eventually turned into me drawing things for Instagram, which then turned into this.

I do still stream on occasion, but a lot of my free hobby time as shifted to making this webcomic successful. I've wanted to do something like this for over a decade and I think I've finally got an idea that really works in this format. Plus, damn I am enjoying writing stories for these characters. I've already written over 40 chapters and I'm still going. If this thing takes off, I'm gonna be stoked!

How often do I update?

Good question. I really don't know yet, but it try to shoot for once a week. Since I do have a full time job that isn't this, sometimes I have to skip a week. Hoepfully, as things go, I'll be able to get a routine in place to ensure I update regularly. That said, even if I don't get a chance to completely finish an episode, I try to post a lot of "works in progress" (WIPs) and other updates on social media with even more special updates for my supporters.

As it stands make sure you keep a weather eye for regular updates on Instagram, Twitter, etc. to see when a new page drops. I don't necessarily want to commit to one particular day of the week, because life happens and it throws me off, but I'm going to shoot for comic updates on Mondays (starting April 22nd, 2024) with regular posts to my social media on Wednesdays and Fridays related to WIPs and fanart.

Make sure you follow me for updates! By the way, there's always the Discord where you can directly ask me "Dude?! When's the next page gonna be done!?"
